COVID-19 Vaccination in Transplant Recipients Statement

Thursday, May 20, 2021

For thousands of solid organ transplant recipients living in North Carolina, Carolina Donor Services, along with multiple healthcare organizations, recommend that organ transplant recipients continue to get vaccinated, resume immunosuppression regimen, and follow protective measures such as wearing masks and social distancing. This is in spite of the CDC’s latest guidance on May 13, 2021 for fully vaccinated people wearing masks and social distancing.

Recent studies have shown that organ transplant recipients acquire less antibodies from the COVID-19 vaccine than the general public. Until more data is compiled, we encourage recipients and those who are our Volunteer Ambassadors for Life to consult their physicians, stay healthy, and follow these guidelines.
